Welcome to the Cannery Row Sardine Label Image Library.
The purpose of this site
is to preserve and encourage historical study and interest in John
Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the Monterey sardine fishing and canning
industries. These vintage sardine labels are an artistic record of the
Monterey sardine industry. The Image Library contains vintage California sardine, pilchard,
mackerel, squid and tuna can labels. To see the labels go to here.
Vintage
Sardines, Pilchards, Mackerel, Tuna and Squid labels from Monterey,
San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oxnard, California. (1920-1960s)
Try the NEW!
experimental library
with thumbnails and brief descriptions. I have been experimenting
with various methods of making image libraries. This one was made using
iPhoto on a Mac using OSX 10.2. The previous version was made in
Photoshop
using the Automate/Web Photo Gallery function. I prefer this version
but
I still think there must be a better tool out there for dummies to
easily
make photo libraries that can be updated. Let me know what you think.

We buy &
trade vintage California Sardines, Pilchards, Mackerel & Squid

NEW! Cannery
Row:
The History of John Steinbeck's Old Ocean view Avenue
by Michael Kenneth Hemp is now available and you can buy
your copy here. See Cannery Row as it
really was through archive photos of professional Monterey
photographers. This book also serves
as an indispensable companion reference to all of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row literature: "Cannery Row" (1945), "Sweet
Thursday" (1954), and "Log From The Sea of Cortez" (1951). 178 archival photos from the Pat
Hathaway Historical Photo Collection of California
Views illustrate the evolution of
the Monterey Peninsula from its earliest inhabitants to the
socio-economic disaster following the
disappearance of the once "inexhaustible" supply of sardines.
